- 'When I entered films, I thought South Indian films were less important. I was offered a South film, which I turned down...'
Nine years after her debut in Bollywood, Rakul Preet Singh has managed to establish herself. Last year he released five films which included mainstream films like 'Thank God' and 'Runway 34', while also romantic films with a social message like 'Doctor G'.
Rakul is now more interested in doing content based films. He says, 'An actor should intend to play different roles. I also want to do masala films and films like 'Chhatriwali'.'
Usually in Bollywood, films about sex education lose their purpose and slide into other topics, but Rakul Preet Singh's 'Chhatriwali' does not. Directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deuskar, the film has been loved by the audience due to its tight screenplay and intuitive performance by Rakul Preet Singh. It released on OTT last month.
Rakul says, 'Though the subject of 'Chhatriwali' is bold, the way the story is told is not bold. It is said very generally and in a way that does not seem strange to anyone. It is kept as normal as possible. Why can't we talk about sexual health the same way we talk about skin health, mental health and emotional health? The tagline of the film is - this chapter is not optional, it is mandatory. And in fact this is the subject which is not optional.'
Rakul strongly believes that sex education is extremely important. He says, 'There are certain things that you believe in real life but when it comes to you in the form of a script, your belief is tested. The specialty of 'Chhatriwali' is that the importance of sex education is explained without giving a speech. I can say with certainty that no film has ever talked about women's sexual health. Some creators have talked about abortion and its psychological, physical and emotional impact on a woman. What we know about adolescent sexuality is inadequate. Sex education should start at home. Our parents should discuss sex with us with an open mind. The more general we make this subject, the more beneficial it will be to us.'
According to Rakul, the discussion about sex is still considered strange in our country. It is still considered impolite to talk about the human body and address its various parts by their proper names.
"Women still don't know that they have every right to talk about sex and express their desires. 'Chhatriwali' touches on the same subject. Sex is not just a subject for men, it is also a subject for women.'
Rakul is also doing a comedy with Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. He will also be seen in 'Indian-Two' with Kamal Haasan. Apart from Bollywood, he has also worked in Tamil and Telugu films, so opportunities have increased for him.
However, Rakul believes that when she made her debut in the film industry, she had little regard for South Indian films. Barely out of college, she was offered a South Indian film but turned it down... But when she got to know more about South Indian films and talent, she never looked back.
