- 'No actor should be judged on the basis of his age. You want to see young people on the cinema screen, but the fact is that no one is going to look young forever.'
It must be admitted that Bo Liwood has changed a lot in the last few years. Today, even after turning forty or fifty, the courage and enthusiasm of actresses to play powerful roles does not diminish. Take the example of Rani Mukerji. Even at the ripe old age of 45, her passion for acting puts a 25-year-old heroine to shame.
Rani Mukerji-Chopra has proved herself as a dependable actor in a career spanning fourteen decades. He has unique original ideas, deep understanding of cinema. He says, 'When the audience sees me on screen, they don't see Rani Mukerji, but the character. I work hard to make my characters real. I pay a lot of attention to the way the character walks and speaks. I strongly believe that body language plays an important part in how you perceive a certain person. If the character gets the right look, understand that 50% of the actor's work is done. You can complete the rest of the work by performing in front of the camera. It is because of my approach that I can be Tina (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), Abhisha (Ghulam) and Michelle (Black).'
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's golden touch casts a spell on the actors. Rani got this experience in 'Black'. Rani says, 'My character in this film was based on Helen Keller. This is a woman who cannot see, hear or speak. While doing this film, I realized that nothing is impossible in the world. We make a mental impression that I cannot do this or that thing. Our approach in life should be to make the seemingly impossible possible. The movie 'Black' did that for me. It changed me as a person. Sanjay Leela Bhansali can get the best performance from the actor.'
Rani was a novice when she did 'Ghulam' with Aamir Khan. He says, 'At that time, it was considered mandatory for actresses to have a sweet and melodious voice. My voice is different. Many felt that the audience might not accept me because of my voice. Well, in 'Ghulam' my voice was dubbed, but in all subsequent films my voice remained the same and the audience especially liked my voice.'
Do you remember Rani's film called 'Hichki'? Rani met many people with Tourette's syndrome to prepare for the role of the character who suffers from epilepsy. Rani says, 'To play any character on screen, it is important to know what and how that person thinks. An actor has to understand his fillings. At the end of the day, we have to express the emotion in front of the camera in a way that touches the audience.'
Having said this, Rani adds, 'Due to the love of the audience, I have been in the film industry for the last 27 years and hope to stay for another 27 years. My fans have helped me break the age barrier and today I have to make a promise to them that I will act till I am 80 years old. I say that no actor should be judged on the basis of his age. Your Hindi films are known as popular cinema so you want to see only young people on the cinema screen, but the fact is that no one is going to look young forever.'
