What is history?
The Maitai community constitutes 64.6 percent of the total population. 90 percent of this community lives in the hilly areas, while most have settled in the Imphal Valley. The Maitai community follows Hinduism and their ancestors converted to Hinduism in the 17th and 18th centuries. The community dates back to the reign of the East Indian patriarch Emperor Ashoka and stretched from Myanmar to the Surma River in Bangladesh. After the inclusion of their Indian share, this community has reduced to only 9 percent of the total geographical area of the state.
